Dream Project

Fall 2009
Teacher: Mrs. Sandy Beck

Look up, up, up
into those billion billion sparkling stars.
What dreams do you find?
Little dreams, big dreams,
each a hope looking for a life to make it real –
a life like yours.
Dream a dream… your very own dream.

– From Dream by Susan V. Bosak

Dreams challenge us to find the very best part of ourselves. In this class, students will focus on their own dreams and goals, both short-term and long-term, and chart a course that will help them reach their stars.

They will learn about the hopes and dreams of others. They will read about great men and women, from Rachel Carson and Albert Einstein to Sojourner Truth and Barack Obama, and learn how they achieved their dreams.

September  30th, we will go on a field trip to the Brogan Museum to see and reflect upon “The Kinsey Collection,” which represents Bernard and Shirley Kinsey’s collection of African-American art and history and their personal dreams.

You're never too young or too old to dream! Students will correspond with (write letters) and finally interview outstanding senior citizens from the Tallahassee Senior Center, learning about their dreams and legacies. We will combine students’ interviews with seniors into a film called “Dream Project.” Parents and seniors will be invited to a screening of our “Dream Project” film at the end of the semester.

Fourth and fifth grade students will write and polish an essay about a senior citizen and enter it in the Legacy Project's "Listen to a Life Contest."

This class will include writing, reading, public speaking, history, the visual arts and technology.

Student Film "Dreams Come True"

If you missed the world premiere of our students' wonderful Dream Project film, "Dreams Come True," you can borrow a DVD from the Astoria Park media center.

A Dreamer is someone who...

Can see beyond "what is" to "what can be"...
Has the creativity and courage to try new things and overcome obstacles...
Makes a difference in their own life and the lives of others...
Can believe and do and think their ideas into reality.

The world needs more dreamers.
