Astoria Park Elementary Nature Nuts |
|---|
The natural world, which holds infinite surprises, gives students a real-world reason to notice and interpret details, ask questions and use the scientific process to find answers, improve their writing skills and aesthetic sense, spend time outside and create memories. In this class, students will explore our beautiful campus at a bug’s eye level, write about and sketch their discoveries in nature journals, do research, take macro photos and maybe even make a movie. They will learn about basic ecology and how adaptations enable plants and animals to survive. They will collect (live) spiders and learn about them with guest arachnologist (spider scientist) Dr. Dave Gowan. They will go on a field trip to Joe Budd Aquatic Education Center to “hunt” wildlife with GPS units. They will meet and learn about live animals that live in our neighborhood – amazing owls, a tiny flying squirrel and common backyard snakes – and the adaptations that enable them to survive. They will use a GPS unit, microscopes and digital cameras to create a “wild map” of our campus. All of this certain to make them – nature nuts!
